A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Build presence through clear, comfortable interaction

Virtual reality puts the player inside a headset-based view of a digital environment. Convincing detail helps, but presence also depends on scale, responsive interaction and an understandable way to move. Start with a small experience that a new player can enter, use and leave confidently. The introductory article below explains how VR gaming works; this guide focuses on production decisions.

Make the first action obvious

Show the player where to look and how to select or pick up one object. Give immediate visual or audio feedback when that action succeeds. Keep instructions within comfortable view and offer a way to repeat them. Test with someone who has not seen the prototype before, noting where they hesitate rather than explaining every step for them.

Treat movement and comfort as design choices

Decide whether the experience is seated, standing or designed for a larger play area. Evaluate movement and turning options on the target headset, including alternatives such as teleportation where appropriate. Avoid building the entire experience around one assumed comfort preference. Provide clear pause and exit controls, and review interactions that require repeated reaching or awkward head movement.

Review assets at their intended scale

Check a character, prop or environment inside the headset before approving it from a flat render. Inspect hand contact, object size, viewing distance and the readability of important details. Establish a performance budget and test the representative scene on supported hardware. Where animated characters are involved, review their gaze, gestures and personal distance as part of the complete interaction.
