A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Choose the right format for an XR experience

Extended reality is an umbrella term for experiences that include virtual, augmented and mixed reality. The useful starting point is the user’s task: what should they see, understand or practise? A product demonstration, a training simulation and an entertainment experience can call for different devices and interaction designs. Use this guide to define that choice before commissioning a large environment.

Decide how the physical world participates

Describe whether the user should see their surroundings, enter a fully virtual setting or interact with digital objects placed in a real space. Identify the intended location and who will help someone start the experience. A supervised installation has different onboarding needs from a visitor trying something independently. Define a clear starting point, a first action and a visible way to finish.

Design for the selected device

List the supported devices and the inputs available on each: hands, controllers, touch or a mouse. Plan object scale, readable instructions and feedback around that choice. Do not assume that a desktop 3D scene becomes a headset experience without further work. Where multiple formats are required, decide which interactions are shared and which need a separate design.

Prototype the task before expanding the world

Build one representative interaction, such as examining a product or completing a guided step. Observe whether a new user understands what to do without verbal assistance. Review comfort, reach, asset detail and the behaviour of interactive objects in the intended setting. Use those observations to refine the brief before increasing the number of scenes, characters or simulation features.
